What’s new on the road? | A look at some of the highlights from the week in Canada.
The latest version of the road survey was released Tuesday, with some important details about the changes.
The survey also shows a decrease in fatalities, but the total number of fatalities for 2018 is still above its previous peak of nearly 10,000.
The number of injuries is up about 40 per cent from 2016.
The overall injury rate for road fatalities remains below that of the last year.
The total number and severity of injuries recorded in the survey also rose by 20 per cent, and the number of incidents for road-related injuries rose by nearly 15 per cent.
As well, the survey showed a significant increase in injuries and deaths for cyclists, and for pedestrians.
The national road death rate for 2018 was almost double the average for previous years, with 621 deaths, up slightly from the 522 in 2017.
The province of Alberta had the highest number of cyclists in the country in 2018, with 2,564 fatalities.
Alberta had nearly half the number cyclists in Canada in 2015, the most recent year for which data is available.
In 2018, Alberta had an average of 2,957 people riding bicycles per day, while the average number of riders per day in Ontario was about 2,741, according to data from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation.
B.C. also saw a jump in the number and number of people riding bikes in the province, from 7,664 in 2018 to 10,639 in 2018.
There were also fewer cases of severe injuries, which are a result of falling or hitting the road, in the Lower Mainland, as well as fewer severe injuries for drivers and pedestrians.
More on the highway crash data and road safety in Canada can be found in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s latest report, Road Safety: Overview.
The Canadian Road Safety Association said the results are an encouraging sign of progress, but also a reminder that the roads are not always safe.
“We are very concerned about the safety of our roads and their people,” said Marc-Andre LeBel, a spokesman for the association.
“It is not clear that we have reached the level of safety that we should have achieved in the last 10 years, and it is time for us to take a real look at what’s going on in the system, what are the issues, what needs to change and what will improve.”
