Baker scaffolds $1,200,000 to build 1 million-square-foot house with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms
By Jeff GellerThe cost of building a new house with a 1 million square foot footprint has skyrocketed to more than $1 million.
And the process is taking two years to complete, and it’s going to take a few more years to finish it.
The Bakersfield home is being built by the construction company Bakersfields Construction, which has received a $1.9 million grant from the National Science Foundation.
Bakersfields, a joint venture of the Bakersville City Council and the Baker family, will build the new house.
The project will be overseen by the City of Bakers, which is seeking $8.9 billion in federal stimulus funds to rebuild homes and businesses.
“We believe that this project is a critical step in the recovery from the Great Recession and that we will be able to put in place the infrastructure that will allow our city to rebuild,” said City Councilman Jim Gandy, the city’s finance chair.
The Bakershouse, which will be the largest building in Bakersdens history, will house a total of 4,500 residents and will be built on the city-owned land next to the B-cycle.
The project was announced by Mayor Ed Reif in a press conference Monday.
“I am very proud to announce the construction of the world’s largest residential construction project,” Reif said in a statement.
“This is an historic and unprecedented development in the city of Baker and I look forward to a strong and successful partnership with the Baking County Council.”
Bakersdons development team announced in May that it was planning to complete a $5 million project that would build a 1,500-unit apartment building.
Construction is expected to begin in June, with the entire project expected to be completed in 2019.
